Question
What systems shape how a civilization evolves?
Thoughts
Hand-wavily, we can think of civilization as a system of systems that humans have created and used to organize ourselves.
These systems interact with one another in complicated ways across technology, economics, politics, and culture.
If we want to talk about how a civilization evolves and how we can improve it (or keep it from falling apart), it can be helpful to break it down into constituent systems to better understand a) how it fits together, b) what the constraints are, and c) how they affect one another.
I came up with the following map of the major forces that shape human civilization.
Infrastructure Systems (Physical & Technological Systems)
Energy & Power
Computation & Information
Materials & Chemistry
Biology & Bioengineering
Human Health & Augmentation
Food & Agriculture
Resources & Water
Manufacturing & Robotics
Transportation & Logistics
Space & Aerospace
Climate & Planetary Engineering
Coordination Systems (Human & Social Systems)
Security, Defense & Resilience
Money & Economic Infrastructure
Human Development & Education
Governance & Institutions
Arts, Media & Cultural Meaning
This list is incomplete and probably wrong in places, but it’s currently how I’m thinking about civilization.
You might have a few others that you think should be on the list, or you might think some of the above can be combined into a broader category.
Looking back at the history of human civilization, some of the categories wouldn’t have been a system.
After all, “Computation and Information” is much older than “Climate & Planetary Engineering.”
It may even be that many years from now, some new systems that we haven’t even thought of will join the list.
For now, we’ll stick to these as we explore what each of them means and how they shape civilization.
Interestingly, progress in one system often unlocks progress in many others.
For example,
Cheap energy changes manufacturing.
Better computation accelerates biology.
Better transportation reshapes trade and culture.
Civilization evolves through the interaction of these systems.
