Near-Earth Asteroid 2026 JH2 extremely close encounter: online observation – 18 May 2026

On 18 May 2026, the near-Earth Asteroid 2026 JH2 will have an extremely close, but safe, encounter with us, coming at 91.000 km from the Earth, about 24% of the average lunar distance. The Virtual Telescope Project will show it to you live!

The near-Earth asteroid 2026 JH2 was discovered by the Mt. Lemmon Survey on 10 May 2026 and announced two days later. Its diameter in supposed to be in 15 – 34 meters range, while the minimum distance from us will be reached on 18 May 2026, around 21:57 UTC, when this rock will be at 91.000 km from the Earth (source: Nasa/JPL). That is 24% of the average lunar distance.
The Virtual Telescope Project will show it live, online, just before the fly-by time, when it will be peaking in brightness, around magnitude 11.5, easy to see even with a small telescope. This way, you can have a look from the comfort of your home.
The live feed will start on 18 May 2026 at 19:45 UTC.
