From local AI chaos to one unified SDK — Foundry Local 1.1 finally makes transcription, embeddings, and agentic chat work together seamlessly on your device.I’ve spent way too many weekends trying to wire up local AI pipelines that do more than just chat. You know the routine: grab whisper.cpp for transcription, battle some Python bindings, pull sentence-transformers for embeddings, realize your PyTorch version is incompatible, then bolt on a chat model that doesn’t share the same tokenizer and suddenly your “simple” voice journal project is a part-time sysadmin job.
Foundry Local 1.1 from Microsoft tries to fix exactly that. It bundles real-time audio transcription, text embeddings, and a unified Responses API into one SDK that runs fully on-device. No cloud endpoints, no per-token billing, and — this is the part that got me — no stitching together five different inference servers.
The new version rolled out with three headline features, but the underlying theme is consolidation. Live transcription comes in as a session-based stream with interim results. Embeddings work with a single method call. The Responses API handles chat, tool calling, and even multimodal vision-language input without making you juggle separate endpoints. I’ve been kicking the tires on all of it…
