Not that the app was being maintained, but it seems it will disappear entirely.
It is finally time for SMS Organizer users to start looking for alternative apps for their SMS needs. Microsoft has sent out push notifications to the users informing them that the app will be sunsetting. No dates are mentioned, but the app will likely disappear from the Play Store in the coming weeks.
Although Microsoft has not updated the app in years, users continued to stick with it for the features it offered. The app allowed easy filtering and organization of messages. It also extracted financial spend data from SMS alerts to create a simple, passbook-like place to check spends and credits. The app also allowed users to back up the messages to Google Drive and restore them at any point.
The app may continue to work for users who already have it installed, but certain features may stop working. For example, the app stopped sending out push notifications a few months ago, which was later fixed. It is likely the same issue will recur if you continue to use SMS Organizer as your default SMS app.
SMS Organizer alternatives
There is no single app that could be a true alternative to SMS Organizer. As we enter the world of RCS, we continue to see more and more SMS apps being discontinued. Almost all Android manufacturers have switched to Google Messages as the default SMS app. Samsung is also discontinuing the Samsung Messages app in favor of Google Messages.
I have not found a reliable, trustworthy app that can replace SMS Organizer. So, I’ll be forced to move to Google Messages if the notifications in SMS Organizer break.
If you do come across an app that can serve as a true replacement for SMS Organizer, please do let me know in the comments.
How to migrate to another app?
SMS messages are not stored directly in SMS Organizer. So, you can simply set another app as the default, and your SMS history should show up normally.
