Biometric Surveillance in New York City

Biometric surveillance tools are inaccurate, biased, and antithetical to a free and democratic society. These technologies, like facial recognition, gait recognition, palm scans, and more, are notoriously inaccurate for people of color, women, and young or elderly people.

New York City law requires any place of public accommodation (like a grocery store, hospital, or entertainment venue) which collects or stores biometric information to post clear and conspicuous signage at every customer entrance. The map alongside shows NYC businesses who have posted signs or been identified in news reporting as collecting biometric data. Help us track and push back against the spread of these technologies by reporting businesses posting these signs using this form!

If we Ban the Scan, we will help protect millions of New Yorkers from the harms of biometric surveillance. This is why we are coming together, as organizations across New York, to fight for a ban on biometrics in New York City stores and venues and a complete ban on facial recognition in New York State.
