The Hype Machine Almost Got Me
In 2026, the marketing blitz to advertise Forza Horizon 6 (“FH6”) embraced YouTube Content Creators and provided them exclusive, early access to the game. The purpose of this relationship was beneficial to both parties:
The YouTubers got a head start on making videos and favorable conditions in the algorithm relating to FH6 to please Subscribers and attract new ones (myself included), and
Playground Games (“PGG”) got high Return on Investment / Low Effort advertising campaigns across multiple channels, dictated the terms of the type of content they were enabling (with release embargoes), and could measure market response by way of comments on the videos.
While it is relevant to point out bringing a half-dozen or more individuals to Japan for an event does come with a price tag, this is a traditional expense where YouTubers are, in a significant respect, being given the treatment formerly reserved for credentialed Journalists. This is especially customary in the automotive industry (see Autoblog link above). Publications, and the YouTubers in this case, have been provided travel and accommodation and early access for decades. I’m okay with all this.
There is a fundamental difference this time around in my view: YouTubers are not bound by any Editorial Restrictions or Ethics beyond those they choose for themselves within highly flexible legal boundaries in the US. In theory this is a neutral situation whereby personal subjectivity is a feature, not a bug.
What is the term for an attempted objective reporting of facts and impressions?
Journalist.
What is the term for an online personality with subjective motives and often funded by sponsorships?
Influencer.
I am sympathetic to the plight of “Legacy Journalism” in the United States, as corporate ownership, reliance on advertising revenue, or the ugly system of Paywalls created, and maintains, a questionable relationship with an espoused ethos of objectivity. That’s why behind the scenes explanation videos about and the profit and messaging control with a channel like Donut Media got so much attention. In that vein, you might not be aware there’s even a YouTube “Ghost Staffing” website offering such gigs.
Professional YouTube Job Board
Whether a talent or creator, here you can find your dream job or your next ideal teammate...

Influencers on the other hand are often much younger than career Journalists, well versed in the tactics and strategies to “maximize engagement” for whatever subject they’re proficient in. In the early days, many were less-than-forthcoming about their creative process when portraying themselves as “independent” while frequently employing contract Writers and/or Video Editors. I’m a fan and Subscriber of several YouTubers like Marc Insco, The Bladed Angel, and Parkerr who are clearly NOT highly staffed enterprises working for “The Man” as of today.
Unlike in the past, where Print or Online Media had limited social commentary features, this cycle was distinctly different. It’s giving 2026 with an exclamation point. In addition to the YouTube comments publicly available, PGG and company promoted their dedicated Forza server on Discord. I joined. More on that later.
The point of mentioning all this is I definitely was influenced in the “run up” to the May 19, 2026 release of Forza Horizon 6. I Pre-Ordered a disc through GameStop. I paid up and picked it up within 15 minutes of the store opening…but when I got home, for some reason, I didn’t take it out of the shrink wrap. What caused me to hesitate?
Seeing is Believing is an Outdated Concept in 2026
What I saw in the YouTube videos by very professional, high quality creators like HokiHoshi, Don Joewon Song, and Ericship 111 definitely hit their target inside me. The material, released even in advance of the “Premium Package” which enabled higher priced purchasers to play four days before the standard package like I chose, highlighted positives almost exclusively. When the embargoes were lifted, they already had MORE TASTY CONTENT READY TO GO!
Looking back, I don’t think there was much of any critical commentary beyond one specific topic: Okay, so the developers re-used some of the car models from prior games, which had been re-used from prior games, and many players found this lazy and kind of offensive to their passionate sensibilities. Everything else? Glowing reviews basically…
