Housekeeping Wages To Top $110K Year In New York City By Early 2030s

A LoyaltyLobby reader sent us a tip about a major change in housekeeping employee wages in New York City. The union just ratified a new eight-year contract with the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council (HTC).
The housekeeping employee wages are expected to rise roughly 5% annually over the length of the contract and reach $110,000 by 2034.
Housekeeping employees are currently earning $40/hour in NYC, and this will jump to more than $61 in 2034. The employees will cross the $100K mark per the labor agreement in 2032.

The employers will naturally cover all healthcare benefits for the 27K members bound by this agreement and their families.
How will this play out?
An employee can clear 8 to 10 rooms during their average shift, and you can calculate the cost to the employer for each room when you factor in the pay + benefits.
I would expect more hotels to encourage guests to skip daily housekeeping and turndown services, and perhaps they will be more eager in the future to increase the points and/or F&B credits offered to do so.
The hotel rates will inevitably increase, as will the point rates.
Conclusion
I am all for offering a fair living wage + benefits to employees, and New York is an expensive market to live in, but this is getting rather “rich” and will further increase rates in the city.

But then, many of us do have an option over when and where we travel, and at least I always take accommodation costs into account as well.
