NTSB Newsroom (@NTSB_Newsroom): "The NTSB is aware that advances in image recognition and computational methods have enabled individuals to reconstruct approximations of cockpit voice recorder audio from sound spectrum imagery released as part of NTSB investigations, including the ongoing investigation of the crash last year of UPS flight 2976 in Louisville, Kentucky.
The NTSB does not release cockpit audio recordings. On a more serious note is there going to be a study done to explore the different outcomes post engine detachment. Had things been done differently by the flight crew.

they publish spectrum charts then act surprised people reconstruct cockpit audio from them. taking the whole docket offline is peak reactive

Pretty soon because of people complaining that they could recreate the audio, all investigations will just stay secret.

I'm always for transparency but I don't think hearing the last few moments of someone's life will lead to a better understanding of the events; the point of transparency.

People react in all sorts of ways when death is imminent and I don't want it to become shock content.

Just release the audio. @grok what is the reason they will not release the audio?

If they take "privacy restrictions seriously" then they wouldn't have released the sound spectrum imagery. This should read, "The NTSB is now aware they screwed up and request people not distribute the audio recording they inadvertently released to the public".

I saw an intern from US NRL decode a voice sample from a scanned waveform on a visitor's business card. This was ~1990.

I only support letting the victims families hear the actual audio under an agreement to never release the tapes publicly.

Pulling a repository of public records is unprecedented. This is an inappropriate move by a government agency, regardless of the reason.

I would like to invite NTSB to a hearing for the said incident. The hearing will cover but not limited to;
The basic technology in encoding and decoding audio across mediums, pre post verification and checks, recall of posts, possible negligence.
