Local Replacement for Phind.comQuestion | Help (self.LocalLLaMA)
submitted 4 months ago by Past-Economist7732

As many are aware, https://www.phind.com/ has shut down. I don’t know how many people on here used it, but I used to love the service back when it was an ai search engine, you could prompt the ai and it would search the internet for relevant info, and ONLY THEN respond. (Don’t get me started on the final iteration of phind, the atrocious “I’m going to build you a website to answer your question”, that was not useful to me).

Is there any way to recreate ai search behavior with local models? Maybe with openwebui somehow? There are some agentic workflows that can kick out to do a web search but sometimes I want to begin with the search and see the results.

[–]Chromix_ 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago (1 child)
In the "small and fast DIY" area there's the Jan 4B model that you can run with their framework and a web search MCP. Then there's the OpenDeepSearch project, which was however abandoned last year. Then there's also a large list of open and closed source search projects.

Btw: Phind didn't just offer that search, they also released a coding model back in the day.

[–]Felladrin 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago (0 children)
I was also surprised to know they were shutting down Phind. They were keeping up with the level of Perplexity back then.

We recently has a thread here on LocalLlama on this topic, so you might also want to check the responses there: https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA/comments/1qdj2nn/solution_for_local_deep_research/
