Volatile leadership and partnerships : Those in power start to remove those who oppose them, while removing unfavorable policies and reframing corruption as beneficial to the common person long-term.
Increased surveillance to "fight crime" : The average person is told surveillance is inevitable and there's no point in resisting because you will get caught.
Increased policing, decreased visibility : Police become harder to identify and use unconventional tactics to apprehend people.
Proving your innocence : You are guilty until proven innocent. No, the police won't provide the surveillance footage showing your innocence.
Scrutinizing your finances : Why did you pay that guy? Do you hold cash? What about crypto? Anything out of the ordinary can be used against you or scrutinized with the questioning as a deterrent.
Questioning your worldview : Do you try to stay private or anonymous? Do you silently avoid specific groups of people? Do you agree with, or not agree with one or more religions? You must be planning something, this warrants investigation!
Questioning your questioning : Why do you care? It's a sensitive subject, so follow the approved path and no one will cause you any trouble.
Self-censorship and the need to hide : If you say it, you could lose your job, your money, your house, and be marked as high risk, all at the same time! Plausible deniability and reframing are on the top of your mind.
Family and friends as informants : Your family, your friends, your coworkers; all reporting on each other and documenting "suspicious" activities or ideas to the police.
Defeatest mentality : Well if they already know everything, it's best for me to go with the others. Why try when it may mean more headaches and stress? The desire to give in outweighs the desire to stand up for yourself.
