High-fidelity fan videos gesturing at what a Final Fantasy VI remake could look like are nothing new. What is new is that generative AI has made it easier than ever to bring those fever dreams to life and make them spread like wildfire across people’s feeds. The latest example imagines the classic SNES RPG in the style of the recent Final Fantasy VII Remake games, and even the creator of the franchise is impressed.<br>A nearly two-minute AI-generated "remake" sizzle reel of Final Fantasy VI was posted on May 16 by X user desusanJP. The footage was set to Terra’s theme from the original game, which serves as its early overworld music. "Please remake FF6," the fan urged Square Enix. The clip shows a third-person over-the-shoulder view of Terra running through towns and dungeons, as well as iconic moments like Sabin suplexing a haunted train.

The AI video quickly went viral, prompting lots of positive reactions. "This is insane, it’s amazing…I really wanna play it…FF6 is seriously something else…," wrote one fan on X, based on the platform’s auto-translation tool. "Maybe I’ll make a little progress on FF6 today!" This then prompted the game’s producer and co-writer, and also the creator of the entire franchise, Hironobu Sakaguchi, to react as well.<br>"What is this?!" he wrote, according to the auto-translate tool. "That’s amazing!" "It’s unclear if Sakaguchi realized it was made by AI versus being one of the many fan-crafted remake renders floating around the internet. But he seemed impressed with it nonetheless, even as some fans criticized the video for its unnatural character gestures and deadened look and feel.

Akitoshi Kawazu, the director of Romancing SaGa, and a combat designer on Final Fantasy I and II, also weighed in. He was in favor of a remake, but it’s unclear what his take was on the look of the video. While some people took issue with turning Final Fantasy VI into AI slop, others simply didn’t like the idea of a hyper-realistic art style versus something more retro-looking or stylized.<br>While everyone, including other Square Enix developers, has been begging for a remake of what many regard as the pinnacle of the series, Yoshinori Kitase suggested it would probably take 20 years to ship it.
