It's Hot, Close the Windows

It’s hot, close the windows | N = 1

Seriously, close the windows*. Unless your house is hotter than outside, all you are going to achieve is a hotter house.

Ok, things are a bit more complicated than just a blanket close the windows but it seems like better advice than a blanket: Open the windows.

If the temperature in your house is 23℃ and outside it’s 30℃, it’s not controversial to suggest that the house will warm up.

If you are by a window the breeze will likely cool you down but it will likely raise the overall temperature and this might be a reasonable trade-off but it stretches belief that there is a person near every-single-window I see open. In fairness, there is even more nuance with opening shade side vs sunny side windows or things like cooking, that I can’t be bothered to get into.

Also, for the love of all that is holy, draw the curtains to prevent the sun coming in or even better get shutters or an awning fitted.

* To be clear: You need to open the windows when the temperature outside is cooler than inside, so generally speaking morning and late evening/night.
