DuckDB Labs Becomes DuckLabs

DuckLabs

We founded DuckDB Labs in 2021 with the goal to be a supportive environment for the DuckDB database project. In the 5 years since, the company has grown significantly to now over 30 full-time employees here in Amsterdam. We have entered strategic partnerships and support contracts with customers ranging from the biggest tech companies to small startups.

Since the company started, DuckDB itself has seen its 1.0 release and an overwhelming growth in adoption. We now see more than one million downloads each day. Following the guiding principles of DuckDB – simplicity, performance, and scalability –, we also created new projects: the DuckLake lakehouse format and most recently the Quack client-server protocol.

Since the company and the people in it now maintain multiple projects, the original name “DuckDB Labs” does not feel quite right anymore. Hence, we’re dropping the “DB” in the name. Today we are changing our name to just “DuckLabs ”, a name that has already been used by some by accident.

What does this mean in practice? Not a whole lot.

DuckDB, DuckLake and Quack continue without any changes. As before, their intellectual property is guarded by the non-profit DuckDB Foundation.

DuckLabs continues to provide developers and maintainers for the DuckDB, DuckLake, and Quack projects, along with potential future projects in the so-called “DuckStack”. We will keep providing services for these projects.

We also would like the newly-rebranded DuckLabs to become a little bit more visible in public. We think we have a pretty unique funding model for Open Source software, where the company is not funded by venture capital. We create revenue by offering feature prioritization and support level agreements. DuckLabs is fully owned by the team behind DuckDB and the other projects. You can expect more communication from the company in the future.

We remain committed to keeping these projects open-source under permissive licenses in the long term, and to ensure that they have thriving communities and ecosystems.
