► New Dolphin G DM-i hybrid revealed
► 621 miles of driving range
► Deliveries take place this Autumn

Chinese car giant BYD has just unveiled its new B-segment hatchback called the Dolphin G DM-i. Catchy name, isn’t it?

The Dolphin G is brand new plug-in hybrid that aims to fight against the likes of the Volkswagen Polo and Renault Clio, and is a counterpart to the electric BYD Dolphin. It’s 4.1 metres long and 1.8 metres wide, making the Dolphin G DM-i only marginally bigger than the now-discontinued Ford Fiesta.

The G DM-i is designed for urban driving in mind and BYD is specifically the European supermini market to compete in. No pressure to the establishments, then.

Specs? Powertrains details haven’t been revealed, but BYD says it has a combined driving range of 621 miles using both its electric and petrol power units. It’s almost a given that the G DM-i will use the brand’s existing 1.5 litre four-cylinder petrol engine combined with its plug-in hybrid tech found in the existing Seal series.

A full launch of the Dolphin G DM-i will take place in June with deliveries in the Autumn to follow. We expect pricing to be very competitive with existing European superminis, starting in the teens before fully-specced ones reach into the twenties.
