This Graphic Designer Wasn’t Able To Land A Job, So He Pretended To Be A Client
August Laustsen, a young Danish art director who recently moved from Copenhagen to Stockholm, applied to all the big advertising agencies in Stockholm but didn’t get a reply from any of them.
So, to catch their attention, he pretended to be a client looking for an agency and sent out the following letter.
Hi,
My name is August and I’m the marketing director of EMERIH. We’re a creative consulting company with our main office in Copenhagen. After big success in Denmark, we’re now planning on expanding to the Swedish market and are looking for a new creative agency in Sweden. We do work for a wide range of clients from small non-profit organizations to giants like Coca-Cola. We really admire the work you’ve done for (X) and would like to talk about the possibilities of a future cooperation.
Since a large part of our business model is based on creativity, it’s important that the creative department have a look at our website before we take it any further. You’ll find it here: emerih.co
Best regards,
August Laustsen

EMERIH
The Link in the Letter Led to His Website
Laustsen used the company name EMERIH which is "HIRE ME" spelt backwards. When employers visited emerih.co, the masthead read "Creative Directors don’t always have time for new talent. But they always have time for new clients – so I decided to become one."
The website was designed like a typical corporate website with links to Laustsen’s resume and portfolio. Though it’s no longer live, here’s what it looked like:
The Result
Laustsen received a positive response from agencies and creative directors who appreciated his bold and innovative approach.
His website received over 70,000 page views
Laustsen lined up eight interviews in four days in Stockholm.
He also received job offers from four to five different countries across the globe.
Update: Laustsen now works as a Senior Art Director at Stockholm-based creative agency Animal.
