CachyOS Delivers Lead Over Arch Linux, Pop!_OS & Ubuntu On System76 Thelio Major

The new System76 Thelio Major powered by the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series and optionally with the Radeon AI PRO R9700 graphics card for an all-open-source AMD Linux stack is a mighty powerful workstation. If desiring even more compute potential out of this high-end desktop/workstation, CachyOS works pretty darn well on this new system with lofty leads over upstream Arch Linux as well as Ubuntu 26.04 LTS and the stock Pop!_OS 24.04 distribution.

For those curious about the performance potential out of CachyOS on this recently launched System76 Thelio Major workstation, I ran some cross Linux distribution benchmarks. The workstation was running the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X 64-core Zen 5 processor, 4 x 32GB DDR5-5600 memory, 1TB Crucial NVMe PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD, and the AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 graphics card.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Pop!_OS 24.04, Arch Linux, and CachyOS were all freshly tested on this workstation, kindly provided by System7 for review, as of last week. CachyOS in its current configuration of Linux 7.0, Mesa 26.1, GCC 16.1, and other leading-edge software updates is delivering some very nice out-of-the-box performance on this AMD Threadripper + Radeon AI PRO setup.
