Automated Intelligence — Research Publication Series

This repository holds the full text of the four-segment research publication series on AI architecture authored by Michael Barnes. Each segment is also published as an open-access preprint on Zenodo and is filed with the U.S. Copyright Office where indicated.

The canonical filed artifacts are the Zenodo PDFs. This repository carries the markdown source of each published document for in-browser reading, full-text search, and discoverability.

The Series

One orientation paper (Preamble) and three architectural contributions, each contribution published as an A/B pair: an accessible Explanatory Companion (A) and a formal Definition (B).

Preamble

A Preamble to Automated Intelligence, Authorization Topology, and Identity Continuity

Names three structural distinctions current AI vocabulary does not carry: entity, authority, continuity. Establishes the questions the three contributions answer.

DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20468026

Published: May 30, 2026

Segment 2 — Automated Intelligence (the entity)

Automated Intelligence: Architectural Class Definition and Explanatory Companion

An architectural class for AI systems defined by five structural invariants. A structural test for class membership, not a capability claim.

Companion: segment-2-automated-intelligence/segment-2a-companion.md

Definition: segment-2-automated-intelligence/segment-2b-definition.md

DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20503401

Published: June 2, 2026

Filed: U.S. Copyright Office, Registration No. 1-15144594701

Segment 3 — Authorization Topology (the authority)

Authorization Topology: Architectural Definition and Explanatory Companion

The structural arrangement that separates authority from capability. Runtime authorization as a mechanical requirement, not a policy preference.

Companion: segment-3-authorization-topology/segment-3a-companion.md

Definition: segment-3-authorization-topology/segment-3b-definition.md

DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20516509

Published: June 2, 2026

Filed: U.S. Copyright Office, Registration No. 1-15144595061

Segment 4 — Identity Continuity (the continuity)

Identity Continuity: Architectural Definition and Explanatory Companion

Identity that survives instance loss through reconstruction from durable artifacts, not memory persistence.

Companion: segment-4-identity-continuity/segment-4a-companion.md

Definition: segment-4-identity-continuity/segment-4b-definition.md

DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20517663

Published: June 3, 2026

Filed: U.S. Copyright Office, Registration No. 1-15161914101

Structure

Each contribution segment is published as two documents:

Companion (A) — accessible introduction. Builds the concept through familiar examples; orients the reader.

Definition (B) — formal architectural definition. Version-locked, citation-grade.

A papers earn the necessity of B; B papers carry the formal structure.

Citing

The canonical citation for each document is the Zenodo record. DOIs above resolve to the formal published artifact with full bibliographic metadata.

For the series as a whole, cite the Preamble as the entry point and the relevant segment for specific claims.
