The company I work for is losing all of its humanity but I don't know where else to go
04 Jun, 2026
8 years ago, I was a junior software developer with only 2 years of fullstack experience and only a high school art degree, with a babyface and a sidecut. My answers for the interview were also not perfect. Despite all that, the teamlead that led the interview saw that I was motivated, and hired me. They focused on and invested in the people, and trusted that that would result in having great employees. And that was what the company culture was like for a very long time.
These kinds of actions are unthinkable of the company I work for anno 2026. I've never seen the new CEO in real life. The new head of the department I work for has a "Hire slow, fire fast" mentality. Work load keeps increasing and there is an acceptable % of people having a burn-out (well, in my opinion it should be 0). They are making literal millions, while having the bottom layer of the company in a chokehold, forcing our direct managers to fire people that are doing well, just to hit targets.
Everything we build is to impress stakeholders and a significant portion of it is AI slop (and yes, they are talking about having a separate styling for those AI components so they are even more in your face!).
The department structure gets jumbled, slightly changing the requirements of some jobs, having these people have to re-apply again. None of them got the job (which they had already been doing for years), because "they don't use AI enough". This just looks like a fucked up legal loophole they're going through to get rid of people that are hard to fire. This stunt will have me lose another 2 close colleagues, making it a total of 4 since the start of this year.
They're taking away our perks bit by bit, like remote office and working without having to clock in and out. I bet that's part of their battle plan to get people to leave by themselves so they can invest in their AI First redesign.
I heard a colleague say "the values of the company are changing, and they are getting further and further from my values" and I resonated with it. It keeps me awake at night.
But where else do I go? I don't have any other marketable skills. My coding skills were barely marketable to begin with. How long can I put 40 hours a week into something that contradicts my own values? How long before they just get rid of me?
