Omnipod 5 — Open-Source AID
What’s happening?
We’ve gotten Omnipod 5 pods working with
Loop and
Trio.
We're currently in a closed beta with a group of experienced testers,
which we plan to expand in an
open beta planned for this summer .
While we aren't quite ready to launch Omnipod 5 support yet,
this has been such a long-running ask from our community that we wanted
to share this exciting news. This work was only possible through the amazing work of
our open-source community of developers supported by the
Nightscout Foundation.
Get ready
As part of building support for Omnipod 5, we created a new pump plugin.
OmnipodKit is a new, unified open-source Omnipod driver,
built over multiple years of work. It works with Eros, DASH, and (soon)
Omnipod 5 pods, and is already available in the latest version of Trio
and the dev branch of Loop.
You can get ready now (and help us) by switching to it with
your current pods - just note that Omnipod 5 support isn’t
switched on yet. Follow these instructions to test it with DASH or Eros:
Update to the latest version of Loop or Trio .
The next time you are changing out a new pod, check the list of available Pump Managers in your app.
If you see the option 'All Omnipod Types', that is OmnipodKit -- select it! If you don't see the 'All Omnipod Types', don't worry - the next time you update, it will become available.
Enable the Data Sharing option and use OmnipodKit like you normally with your current DASH or Eros pods.
By enabling Data Sharing and switching to OmnipodKit, you'll be only a single click away from using Omnipod 5 once it's ready!
Frequently asked questions
Can I switch to using Omnipod 5 pods now?
We’re excited too - BUT Omnipod 5 support is not available in Trio or Loop yet!
However, OmnipodKit is already available in the latest
version of Trio and the dev branch of Loop for DASH and Eros pods.
Our developers have put
multiple years of work into a unified pump driver that works with Eros,
DASH, and Omnipod 5 pods.
However, the ability to use Omnipod 5 is still being tested and
won’t show up yet. You can help us by enabling the Data Sharing
option and using the OmnipodKit option with your current DASH or Eros pods.
I use Omnipod 5 today but not with Loop or Trio. What does this mean for me?
Loop and Trio are community-maintained applications for those who were not waiting for
advanced algorithms to control their type 1 diabetes. If Omnipod 5 is working for you,
great! Nothing is changing. This announcement brings more options to existing users of Loop and Trio
who use other pumps or pods.
How does this affect Android users or AndroidAPS?
Loop and Trio are for iOS (iPhone) only. Once Omnipod 5 support has launched,
you can get an iPhone and switch to Loop or Trio.
While we don't have anything to announce today, there is work being done on supporting
Omnipod 5 in AndroidAPS - it is just not ready and doesn't currently have an ETA.
You can keep up to date on development progress by monitoring the AAPS Users Facebook
group or the WeAreNotWaiting Discord server. Tentatively, the AndroidAPS
developers hope to support Omnipod 5 by the end of the year —
however, there is still much additional work needed.
Does the iPhone 16 or 17e still have connection issues with Omnipod 5 pods?
There has been no indication that the iPhone 16 or 17e have the same
connection issues with Omnipod 5 pods as with DASH Atlas pods.
Does the Omnipod 5 have the 203 errors?
We can’t guarantee you won’t encounter a 203 error or any other
error, but at this time there has been no indication that the frequency of
203 errors persists with Omnipod 5 pods.
When will Omnipod 5 support be released so I can use it?
When it’s ready™️
- likely by the end of the summer.
You can already use the new Omnipod driver, OmnipodKit. The Omnipod 5
portion is still in closed-beta testing, but you can use the new OmnipodKit
by updating to the latest version of Loop/Trio, deleting your pump in settings after
your pod dies, and selecting “All Omnipod Types” from the pump menu.
Can I be a closed beta tester? Do you need more testers?
At this time, a select number of developers and experienced users are doing
highly involved testing. Once it is stable enough for advanced users, it will
be released to the dev branch of Trio/Loop and we will update the community with that progress.
So no, we do not need additional closed beta testers yet - but we are working fast on making this available
to the community as soon as possible!
What does this mean about support for other pumps, like Mobi?
The same developers working on Omnipod 5 are also working on Mobi.
Omnipod 5 took priority due to the drastic increase in 203 errors and
iPhone 16/17e communication issues. We are still working on Tandem Mobi and
hope to have an update for you… soon™️…
More information on the open beta will be available later this summer!
