Uni president told graduates to 'end themselves'

Special Taiwan (@TaiwanSpecial): "Awkward Taiwan:

In probably one of the more surreal commencement speeches of all time, graduates at Taiwan’s Shih Hsin University #世新大學 were told to “End yourselves quickly” if they couldn’t keep their lives in order after they entered the work place.

This rather drastic admonition was made by Shih Shin University president Chen Ching-ho 世新大學校長陳清河 during his commencement address to the school’s Master’s and PhD degree graduates.

He then went on to tell them that if they could not manage their lives they should exit from the world because the world wouldn’t need people like them.

The ensuing uproar has led to calls for Dr Chen to resign. Yesterday he apologized for “had not been sufficiently careful in my remarks” and announced he would take a two month unpaid leave.

in a very generous interpretation of his words, could he have meant "end your current habits/thinking/version of self and become better"?

He was being too soft and liberal. A true Taiwanese man would end himself slowly and painfully.

Did he take his own advice after being 'insufficiently careful'?

The English translation here is imprecise.

He is saying “if you can’t , you should 结束, it’s better to just quickly 结束.”

结束 is a common verb used for finishing tasks, concluding meetings, or wrapping up events. The closest English match is conclude, and NOT quit, kill, or die (uh, unless talking poetically about a historical drama or relationship ending).

The uproar was probably more about him being a High-Expectations Asian Father to a bunch of students, and doing it on what should’ve been a celebratory occasion congratulating them for being the ones who DID make it, and not him saying “if you can’t hack it, KYS.”

It sounds even worse in Mandarin because you can tell he seriously meant every word of what he said. This is beyond awkward; it’s bizarre

This is a typical "those who can't do teach" professional educator in Taiwan. In his own stupid little bubble.

He literally said that if you are not needed by the world you should end yourself. Fuck it. I love the color of sunset, that’s why I will keep existing; I love my parents and brothers, that’s why I will keep existing. I don’t...
