California’s 186,000 private security guards are regularly called upon to manage conflicts, respond to emergencies, and face serious physical risks, even death—often without adequate pay, benefits, or training. Despite the growing use of private security services, the industry remains characterized by weak labor standards and limited policy attention. This low-wage workforce, made up overwhelmingly of young men of color, faces challenges often hidden in plain sight.
This factsheet examines the wages, working conditions, and demographics of California’s private security industry. It highlights how job quality in this sector is directly tied to public safety outcomes. Low wages and limited benefits contribute to high turnover, which can undermine continuity and experience on the job. At the same time, gaps in training and professional standards can affect how workers respond in high-stakes situations. Together, these conditions shape the effectiveness and reliability of a workforce that is increasingly central to maintaining safety in workplaces, public spaces, and communities.
