The Setup<br>For 150 years, John Bates Clark’s Marginal Productivity Theory told us: work hard, get paid what you’re worth. The market is fair. Everyone gets their contribution back.
AI is about to make that promise mathematically impossible.<br>What Clark Actually Said<br>Clark’s law: in a competitive market, labor gets paid exactly what the last worker adds to output.
It was capitalism’s moral justification — you earn what you produce, no more, no less.
It assumed two things: human labor always has value, and markets distribute that value fairly.
