What a great day for Anthropic

The tag.)">blogosphere is alight with you-had-it-comings regarding the US government’s export ban of Fable/Mythos.

But I keep coming up with new reasons why this is great for Anthropic. Here are five six seven.

It’s validation of “it’s too dangerous to release” claim

There was much guffawing and rolling of eyes at Anthropic’s claims that Mythos was “too dangerous to release”. Well, this is now validation of that claim. You see, even with the Fable guardrails the US government thinks that!

It gives Dario Amodei’s regulatory capture article so much more legitimacy.

Anthropic wanted to engage with the government and set some ground-rules. You can bet that as soon as they were informed of the ban they replied with their proposal of what “sensible” regulation would look like.

It’s a free pass to miss revenue/profitability targets.

The financial engineering that went into the profitability claim was impressive. But this is now a free pass to miss revenue targets for the entire year.

It’s created compute breathing space.

I’m certain that they planned additional capacity for the Fable release. I’m equally certain that it would not have been enough making their less-than-stellar availability even worse.

Which, in turn, has freed up some marketing budget.

And since they don’t have to make revenue or profitability targets and have free compute capacity that sounds like the perfect opportunity to kick off a time-limited increase to limits or something. We know that OpenAI is probably planning a price war. Well, Anthropic just gained initiative.

This makes Project Glasswing much more mainstream. Glasswing was an attempt at some hype but it mainly landed in tech circles. But with the government getting involved this is now news for regular people as well, and it’s everywhere. It makes it mainstream.

It’s stealing Elon’s thunder.

I’m sure that’s a nice cherry on top.

Sounds kinds of great to me.
