Its almost 25 years since this station came on air and I don't think many people know it existed. I'd like to find out a little more about Telstar TV.

This is from the AM/FM site:

"Pirate TV has been slow coming to Britain. The first attempt was Telstar TV in Birmingham who operated in early 1984. They broadcast after BBC2 closed down each Saturday night showing a mix or feature films and pop videos all generally available from local video shops. However after only a few broadcasts they disappeared. At the time this was explained as being 'for fear of the consequences of being caught' but this was never properly explained. The DTI was reported to be devoting a large effort into trving to track them but with remote equipment the risks would not have been that great."

I remember seeing something on Nationwide or Midlands Today about this but no one ever talked about who was responsible. I think its time people fess'ed up to this.....

Telstar was a spin off from Radio Star (Which later became PCRL).

I too remember seeing a clip of Telstar on the local TV news.

I once heard that the guy who did the in vision continuity announcements was recognised by his boss when the clip was shown, and it nearly got him the sack!!

In those days, in vision continuity was the norm on ITV and that may be part of the reason they did it, but it also gives a nice friendly feel to a station when done right. How do you protect your anonymity though? You can't very well don a balaclava as that takes away the friendly vibe and makes you look like a terrorist station. I'm surprised they had IVC at all in that case and actually risked being recognised. I would definitely have to go with purely ident and graphics led continuity if I was doing pirate TV.

I just thought, would it be quite simple to get a small pirate TV station going? Couldn't you just filter and amplify the output of a VCR and feed it into the correct aerial? I don't know who would be wandering around the UHF band looking for pirate TV stations to watch though

Well you could do that but the output of most cheap UHF TV modulators is pretty dirty - you might get a 100 metres or so but you would probably trash the UHF band in the area as well.
