The subject of Money Ball figured out what everyone else could not see.
As a baseball manager with a limited budget, he had to build a team to compete with massively funded competitors. Sound familiar?
Using data, Billy found that on base percentage is the most important metric for baseball players. Not home-runs, just getting on base. Be a single or double. Everything else is just noise.
Home-runs don’t win ballgames. Not consistently anyway. What wins is for more of your team to reach a base than the competitor. Thus more opportunities to score.
The same is true for business. You win in business by having more opportunities to generate revenue. For most, this is with qualified sales appointments.
Some of those will not buy. A few may buy, but not today. Several will sign this week. Statistically, like on base percentage, it does not matter. Having more opportunities will eventually result in more sales. Just as more players on base will result in more runs.
