Photo by Mohammad Rahmani on UnsplashI remember the exact moment something changed for me.
It was late on a Tuesday. I had just onboarded onto a massive legacy codebase at a new project, the kind that has no documentation, three different ORM patterns stitched together, and a git history that reads like a series of panic attacks in commit form. I pasted a thousand lines of old Java into Claude and typed: “Explain what this is doing and identify any risks.”
Within seconds, I had a coherent summary, a list of potential null pointer exceptions, and a refactoring suggestion that would have taken me an hour to arrive at on my own.
I have been building software professionally for over ten years. I have shipped production systems, led engineering teams, debugged memory leaks at 2 am, and argued passionately about tabs vs. spaces. I thought I had seen every wave of tooling come and go. But this one felt different. This one actually changed how I work.
The Senior Engineer Problem Nobody Talks About
There is a particular challenge that nobody warns you about when you cross the ten-year mark in software engineering.
