Everyone, look at this!
Until recently, the Codex team at OpenAI used to reset the weekly limits for all Codex users either to celebrate major milestones or whenever a major bug was fixed.
Everyone was happy with a rate limit reset.
Really? Everyone?
A group of users who had seriously optimized their Codex usage around their actual needs pointed out that these random gifts could actually be detrimental to their overall usage.
We reported this to the team, and they did it.
You can now reset limits when it fits your usage.
Congratulations, everyone!
Let’s build!

@OpenAI
We heard you wanted to use Codex rate limit resets on your own time.
Starting today, we’re rolling out the ability to save rate limit resets to use later.

As if this wasn’t enough, there is a cherry on top:
Through June 24, Plus and Pro users can refer up to three friends to try Codex.
When a friend sends their first Codex message, you’ll both get another banked reset.

What an upgrade! Really great idea.
I recall someone on this forum dissatisfied with forced or uncontrollable rate resets. It’s really nice to know that their voice (among others I imagine) were heard.

Hi. I am a plus user. I have searched extensively and cannot see that I have my 1 reset like everyone else got. Why was I excluded? Or am I not excluded, but I cannot redeem on Linux (No Desktop Codex App) – I mean, I can’t imagine coding outside of Linux, so it does mean I am excluded?
You said “Plus users” will get this, but currently, only people who purchase Windows/MacOS, not ChatGPT Plus, will get this benefit. Being excluded doesn’t feel good. Moreover, I, as a Linux user, have currently zero incentive to refer a friend. Will this be fixed?
In fact, to me, this presents as: I must purchase Microsoft Windows, or a Mac device, or I will never be able to benefit from Codex resets again. This is like ANTI-UX.
Presumably, if the reset expires while Linux users remain unable to redeem it, then this is teetering on false marketing because OpenAI (on X) said: “We’re starting Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users with one free reset:” – which is incorrect currently for Linux users, as they are unable to access said reset. This is misleading by omission.
Zero reason to be “happy”.

That is not entirely correct @Noah13 — at least not for the VS Code/VSCodium plugin as a fellow Linux user. Once you run out of messages, the reset option appears there.
At the risk of sounding wildly spoiled by this newfound reset prosperity, it would also be useful to see how many resets are available in total (if that is a thing).
Great update ! Begun, the price wars have

It might be now, “to celebrate a milestone, and keep you relatively teased into staying with Codex, we added another +1 to everyone to press the button on”.
But also could be a “buy a credit block for $40 – or buy a boost” feature, awaiting payment surface.

I cannot reproduce that. Latest VSCode + extension: there is no popup or anything when my 5H limits hit 0%. Nor does it show anything in my usage, despite being a plus subscriber. Maybe they just left me out for some reason… A price war has not begun if they’re not really giving the promotion to everyone they said they did, it’s mostly just bullsh*tting.
It is also correct to say it is false marketing/advertising because they said: “We’re starting Go, Plus, Pro, and Business users with one free reset:” – yet not every Plus user got a reset, which is contradictory to what the marketing suggests.
They should have said “We have given some users across Plus, Go, Pro and Business a free reset”.
But that doesn’t sound so nice, despite being true.
They are creating a false perception that OpenAI gives out resets generously,...
