Goodbye RSS – Jon’s Blog

Goodbye RSS

14 May, 2026

This has been on my mind for awhile. The constant need to check rss feeds was as bad for me as a regular social media network. It made me feel like work too. Curating and deleting dead feeds took time away from my day.

A digital detox was on my list to accomplish. I’ve read blog posts about this regarding deleting apps on your phone and deleting accounts from services. I reviewed how I was using my time through the day and reading rss feeds of blogs and tech articles. Many tech posts I didn’t even read past the headlines since I’m not interested any longer in tech. These were the first to go from my rss reader.

I prefer visiting blog sites and enjoying their personal designs. It gives me a chance to check their other interesting pages like blogrolls, uses and now, for example. This also gave me a chance to clean up my bookmarks because several blogs were dead links. My rss reader apps rarely gave me a visible error message and it is hard to know if someone has deleted their blog or just taking a break. To my surprise after managing my bookmarks, their blogs were gone.

I deleted every app on my phone I didn’t need. Leaving the phone in another room is working out for me but if I was away from home, like at work or something, these apps were taking me away from being in the moment. I'm back to reading my ebooks, borrowed library books and audiobooks. No more app subscriptions and wasting time with different apps. If there is a mobile site I can use, that is what I will use.

I've stopped listening to podcasts too. The annoying thing for me about podcasts was finding any topic that interest me. It used to be easy to find podcasts with great hosts and topics but today everyone and their dog does podcasts. Even Netflix has interview show series but call it podcasts. The tech podcasts category is so small these days which is a sign of the times.

I feel the enshittification of everything digital and analog has beaten me down. It is hard to get away from it but the best I can do for myself is have less of it in my every day life.
