About
The Civic Atlas is a project which marries leading civic data sets with information on governance types and physical capitals.

This project is an exploration of physical governance. As international relations enter another era of rocky uncertainty, it’s important to have the opportunity to look at a world which is not flat or equal. Many countries are on the march away from freedom and democracy towards autocracy. Many are already there.
Explore this project by selecting various freedom and democracy indices in the dropdown menu. Click a state to see where its legislative authority is housed, more information about the country, its governance system, and its governance scores. To learn more about each index, click on its link in the nav bar while selected.

This is our globe.
We all live here.

FAQ
Where does the data for this map come from?
The indices used on this project are the Economist’s Democracy Index, V-Dem Institute's Democracy Index, Freedom House’s Freedom in the World report, The Fund for Peace’s Fragile States Index, and International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy report. To learn more about these indices, click the source tab.

How are the scores calculated?
Each index has its own advanced methodology with their own factors for how they score a country. These scores are built by analysing a range of factors including pluralism, electoral participation, civil liberties, election security, corruption, judicial independence, and press freedom among others. To explore the exact methodology for each index, click source above and learn more about each index.

How come my country doesn’t include its full name?
The names of states and territories in the project use their common naming. For example, this project uses the name ‘China’ instead of the full governmental name ‘The People’s Republic of China.’

How are some contested borders decided?
This project uses de facto control over a territory meaning that contested areas are included as the part of states which are currently governing that territory. This project does not endorse the annexation of any contested area or make a judgment about rightful ownership.

Why are some regions categorized as “Dependent territories” or “Autonomous”?
Because of the complex realities of the relationships between states, nations, and other governing bodies this project separates non-independent territories and governments into dependent territories and autonomous territories. Autonomous dependents are places which administer their own internal politics and make decisions about most political matters except for foreign policy which is dictated by the sovereign state they are attached to. Dependent territories may administer some of their own politics but have less independence from the metropole.

Why is the map running slowly or stuttering on my device?
This map uses advanced 3D WebGL rendering and physics-based animations to display hundreds of data points in real-time. If you are experiencing low frame rates, try closing background browser tabs, or ensure you are not operating your device in "Low Power" or "Battery Saver" mode, which restricts graphics processing.

Can I download the data shown on the map?
Yes, all the raw data used to build this page are available on GitHub. Further, explore each individual index to learn more about how they score each country.
