About everything*

What is and what matters

The everything* project is an exploration of "what is and what matters".

It investigates questions about science, philosophy and our place in nature.

ourUniverse is the first part of the project, examining the question "what is" through a journey across all orders of magnitude.

From subatomic particles to the edge of the observable universe, it reveals complexity on every scale and offers perspective on how we fit into the larger picture.

Inspired by Powers of Ten

ourUniverse was inspired by the 1977 short-film Powers of Ten by Charles and Ray Eames, which in turn was based on the 1957 book "Cosmic View" by Kees Boeke.

The Author

ourUniverse is a project by Thomas Mahlke. Created over several years as a spare-time project, it is driven by a fascination with science, scale and our place in the universe.

I have been a member of the demoscene for many years, a community dedicated to digital art and technical creativity.

In many ways, this project combines these interests that have influenced and fascinated me over the years: art and technology, education and entertainment and science and philosophy.

When I first saw Powers of Ten, it had a huge impact on me and continues to inspire me today. I hope ourUniverse can spark a similar sense of wonder in others.

ourUniverse aims to be scientifically accurate while remaining accessible and understandable.

Many structures shown are based on current scientific knowledge. In some cases, simplified models are used to communicate concepts more clearly when a more accurate representation would be difficult to interpret.

The natural world is often far more complex than any visualization can fully capture. Where necessary, a balance has been made between scientific accuracy, visual clarity and the scope of a small independent project.

As the project evolves, some visualizations may be refined and updated over time.
