86 of the top 100 steam games should be Steam Machine ready

With the new Steam Machine approaching with nearly 30,000 compatible games that have been rated by Valve - how many of the most played games will actually work?

I decided to take a look and find out for you. This is based on data taken from SteamDB earlier today (June 23rd), using their 24 hour peak concurrent player count at the time. Not the most perfect method - more of a snapshot in time but good enough to get an overview. Then going through each of them to see what the current support status is on SteamOS Linux.

Anti-cheat is still one of the big problems that SteamOS needs to overcome. Hopefully if more people use SteamOS either directly on Valve hardware like the Steam Machine and Steam Deck, or on custom builds, we might see the needle shift there.

Footnote: I took the editorial decision to remove apps that weren't games and one demo. But I kept game-specific modding tools in like FiveM and tModLoader since they felt appropriate.

Hitting 86% when it comes to the most played games is a pretty great achievement for Valve, thanks to a mixture of Native Linux versions and Windows games running via Proton. Shows their software work is paying off at least. If you had attempted to run this type of list a few years ago the numbers would have been dramatically lower.

For a lot of players, the Steam Machine will be in a good spot - if you keep in mind the anti-cheat caveat noted above.
