He runs a construction law training company called HQControl where he sells courses, e-books, and consultations.<br>A few months ago, he told me he wanted a website. Nothing fancy. Just a clean place to show his work, let people enrol in courses, and buy his books.<br>I’ve been building websites for 16 years. WordPress, Elementor, custom code — I’ve done it all for clients. My immediate instinct was to just sit down and build it for him.<br>But then I stopped.<br>Sure, I could build it in a weekend. But what happens when he wants to change a headline on a Tuesday night? What happens when a plugin breaks while I’m in a client meeting? Every single update would have to go through me.<br>My dad is a smart guy and has been using Claude and ChatGPT for a while. He went to them and asked: “Help me build a website for my business.”<br>This is where the LLM illusion falls apart.<br>Claude and OpenAI are incredible tools — I use them every day. But when a non-technical person asks them to build a website, the AI gives them a developer’s roadmap. It tells them to sign up for Vercel. Set up a Supabase database. Create a GitHub account. Install Node, configure an API, deploy via CLI.<br>To you and me? That’s just a random Tuesday. To a 75-year-old who just wants a landing page? That is an absolute brick wall.<br>It’s also a massive overkill. My dad doesn’t need a real-time database, serverless functions, or a CI/CD pipeline. He needs a page that loads, a contact form that doesn’t break, and a way to update his content without calling his daughter.<br>The real question wasn’t “Can I build this?” It was “Can he run this without me?”<br>I thought about WordPress, but then I’d still be managing hosting, security patches, and plugin updates. That took two minutes. After that, I was completely off the hook. I just watched from the sidelines — proud, and honestly, a little amazed.<br>This is the gap that standard LLMs miss. Claude and ChatGPT can generate beautiful code, but code is useless to a layman if they don’t know how to deploy, host, and maintain it.
