maybe i’m just unc now, but i’m slowly learning about myself that i definitely lean more introverted than extroverted. i don't gain that much energy from socializing. don’t get me wrong, i certainly gain a lot of joy, memories, and laughter, but i’m hardly ever left with more energy than when i started (with maybe ~7 of my closest loved ones as an exception).
still, my best memories are shared alongside others. so, indeed, people and community will remain incredibly important. this will be the case forever.
introversion vs. extroversion boils down to energy sources. where do you gain more energy from - time with others? time solo? it’s the latter for me, but i would consider myself to be quite socially apt regardless.
i tend to instinctively reach to do something solo, but if i’m in a social environment, i have no issue taking the reins and getting a great conversation going. this is because i still highly value time with others, even if it doesn’t feed me energy. so, i still push myself to meet new people and put together events. it’s fun, and that fun compounds into community effects that i could never replicate solo.
because i still put in the social reps, i also still have the skill. being introverted isn’t an excuse to be socially inept. i like to use that description to frame my extroversion, or rather lack thereof.
i’m introverted with pretty good social aptitude.
ps. 3 years ago, i adamantly called myself an ambivert. i’d say that the threshold i talk about in this blog post from 2023 now is only fully replenished with very specific people and particularly serendipitous experiences in my life. i can’t chalk that up to an extroverted tendency.
