Expect RAM prices to stay high with Micron locking in deals for 5 years

Want RAM prices to fall? Don't expect it soon. Micron recently announced they've signed 16 SCAs (strategic customer agreements) across five-year terms.
It's a pretty bleak outlook for the industry as a whole as they won't be the only ones. If you remember, Micron also announced back in December 2025 how they shuttered their Crucial consumer business - and going by this, it seems they won't be coming back to help any time soon thanks to the continuing AI boom.
From their earnings sheet: "DRAM and NAND industry demand continues to significantly exceed industry supply. We expect tight conditions to persist beyond calendar 2027 as a result of AI-driven demand across all segments coupled with structural supply constraints. We are excited to announce that we have now signed 16 strategic customer agreements, or SCAs, which we expect will fundamentally transform our business model".
Speaking on industry trends, taking from their earnings call again: "With respect to supply, our customers are recognizing that supply shortages in memory and storage will take considerable time to improve. Even as we expect industry supply to improve gradually in 2028, we currently do not have line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up with increasing demand".
What a rough time to be into computing.

Yeah and Xbox increased prices yesterday and they said that the prices will double again by 2027. Just ridiculous.

I am sorry for all people that did not buy early enough new hardware, especially those that do not even have a first system to play with (a bad time to be teenager gamer etc).
But I think that is kinda positive for the RAM supply and therefore prices. The main reason no company build up manufacturers was the question if the shortage will persist or not. In the worst possible case it would persist for 10 years and nobody would build up production lines. Now we know that it will persist for at least 5 years and we can expect some companies will join the RAM production.
I don't argue for the environment here (the contract kinda shows how many data center they want to build).
