Nobody should overcharge founders for basic data room features.

Companies like PaperMark make around $2.5M/yr as a 2-person company by charging $ 1000s for the simplest features.

We came up with DataRoom internally at first, so that we don’t pay $ 1000s on sending documents to people. It just didn’t make sense to us that platforms like DocSend or even Docusign (simple e-signatures) are charging so much for something we could just build ourselves.

Then, we had the idea of releasing the software to startups and entrepreneurs around us to save everyone money and prevent overpaying for softwares that shouldn’t cost $$$$.

Papermark recently came up with false accusations that we took “enterprise-grade code” from their product. We quickly responded with proof confirming there was no Papermark code used in the creation of DataRoom.

We came to find that the issue was isolated to two settings pages (frontend UI and language), which were fixed immediately after it was flagged. Since then, we’ve conducted a full audit of the platform and can confirm there are no other issues.

We’re sorry for all the noise, that was never our intention.
