June 17, 2026
On Wednesday, the Hamburg Local Division of the UPC disclosed that Dolby Video Compression, LLC has filed a lawsuit against two European subsidiaries of Chinese display and smart TV manufacturer TPV Technology : TP Vision Europe B.V. and TPV Displays Polska Sp. z o.o. , alleging infringement of European Patent EP2721819, (“Entropy Coding Supporting Mode Switching”). That patent was among more than 5,000 assets Dolby acquired in 2024 from GE Video Compression, LLC, following GE’s exit from the codec licensing market.
PRIP searched the video codec patent pools of Access Advance, Via LA, and Sisvel, and ultimately found this patent in Sisvel's AV1 patent pool.
This is Dolby's latest patent action against AV1; previously, in March 2026, Access Advance officially announced that the first AV1 assertion by a licensor in its pool had been initiated, with Dolby Laboratories filing lawsuits against Snap Inc. in the United States and Brazil, alleging unlicensed use of patents related to the AV1 and HEVC video codecs. That action marked both the first assertion of an AV1 implementation by an Access Advance licensor and the first AV1 assertion against a streaming platform. Although AV1 is promoted as a royalty‑free codec, Dolby has made no royalty‑free or FRAND commitment with respect to AV1, and is explicitly seeking injunctive relief, underscoring that the implementation of patented technology carries clear licensing obligations.
Another case of Dolby's AV1 patent enforcement was reported by IP Fray in May 2026, in which the defendant was Chinese TV manufacturer Skyworth, and a court in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, granted a preliminary injunction.
Both defendants are affiliates of TPV Technology, a Shenzhen-listed company (000727) and the world’s largest monitor maker. TP Vision Europe, a 50/50 joint venture between TPV and Philips based in the Netherlands, designs and sells Philips-branded TVs across Europe and beyond. TPV Displays Polska, a wholly owned Polish subsidiary of TPV, operates the group’s main European plant, which mass-produces LCD and OLED TVs and monitors with an annual capacity of several million units for the European market.
PRIP has identified a total of 10 patent infringement cases filed by Dolby at the UPC, and 7 of those have been settled. Dolby’s previous nine UPC litigations mainly involved HEVC and audio decoding patents, while this marks Dolby’s first AV1 lawsuit brought before the UPC.
