Micron Predicts DRAM Crisis Until At Least 2028

It's no secret that the DRAM crisis is predicted to go on for a while, with everyone from Korean news outlets to, more recently, OEMs like Lenovo, predicting that massive price hikes are slated to be the norm in PC hardware for the foreseeable future, thanks to AI data center demand. Following the recent Micron Q3 financial report, in which the DRAM maker revealed record results for the quarter, Micron's CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, commented on the current DRAM situation, stating to investors that "Our customers are recognizing that supply shortages in memory and storage will take considerable time to improve."
He continued, saying that "Even as we expect industry supply to improve gradually in 2028, we currently do not have a line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up with increasing demand." Earlier in 2027, Micron announced a number of new initiatives to increase DRAM supply to meet current demand, including a new megafab in New York, which it expects to complete by early 2029, and intentions to buy a fab from PSMC in a $1.8 billion deal that would see meaningful DRAM output by late 2027. While the shortage is expected to ease somewhat, it's entirely likely that prices will remain elevated for a while to come, which will likely affect the upcoming Xbox Helix console, PS6 and PS6 Portable, and the already announced Steam Machine—which Valve expects will continue to be overpriced—for a while.

Correct title should be "Micron decides to continue DRAM Crisis Until At Least 2028"

What a time to be alive. And I made a "good" deal with my friend as he sells me 16G DDR4 for 100EUR.....

Right on cue everyone has been covering Micron:
Dr. DroA lot of new "unforeseen issues and market conditions" can/will occur until 2028...
We already are heading for a disaster in coming months with regards to failed crops and food shortages. Tech and other luxury items will be last thing on minds of masses around the world.

Oh yeah, okay. All the tech companies around the world got "their" money from chips act and similar funding from tax dollars, i.e. from my taxes, and then they decided to rip off consumers in a few more ways.

But LLMs are not likely to replicate the near monopolies that have made the market power of current tech giants hard to assail. A better analogy for them might be airlines, which are hobbled by small margins, intense competition, high expenses and dependence on hardware created by outside vendors.
We could wind up with a lot more data centres than we need.

Ruruas he sells me 16G DDR4 for 100EUR.....
A friend's price? Wait a minute... Just before the supposed AI crisis and the even more supposed RAM shortage, I paid almost €100 for 32 GB. DDR5!

Fred.

RuruWhat a time to be alive. And I made a "good" deal with my friend as he sells me 16G DDR4 for 100EUR.....
DDR4 is not that affected.

BorisDGDDR4 is not that affected.
It has been steadily increasing in price, though. DDR3 seems mostly safe, minor bumps - the first contract price increase for DDR2 was just spotted, though... RAM is the new gold

2030 minimum, except AI bubble bursts.
In case you say "The Chinese are coming!", they are not stupid, they will not sell cheap. Not to mention that probably much of the Chinese RAM will also be going into Chinese Supercomputers, AI factories and consumers.
