Japanese electronics manufacturer Panasonic has unveiled a new CO₂ air-to-water heat pump for residential use.
The system uses a CO₂ (R744) refrigerant system, which relies on carbon dioxide as a natural working fluid instead of conventional synthetic refrigerants. This technology enables efficient heat transfer even at low ambient temperatures and supports the production of high-temperature hot water with strong overall energy performance.
Initially conceived for the Australian market, the Panasonic CO₂ Heat Pump is available in 16 configurations allowing homeowners to choose between different sizes according to the consumption needs and profile.
The largest system of the series has a capacity of 6.0 kW and can reportedly achieved a coefficient of performance of up to 6.1, while being able to produce hot water at 59 C at an outside temperature of -10 C.
"Each system can integrate with existing solar (PV) systems in the home, allowing households to use house power or PV power at their preferred times of the day," the company said in a statement. "Users also have the flexibility to set heating start and end times and target temperatures up to twice per day, activate a holiday mode to disable water heating while travelling, or use the boost function to manually start the heating process at any time."
Each setup pairs an outdoor unit, available in either 4.0 kW or 6.0 kW, with a choice of eight tank configurations ranging in size from 250L to 400L. The tanks are offered in either vitreous enamel or stainless steel construction. Operating at just 37 dB(A), the system is also claimed to be among the quietest options currently available on the market.
The new product is backed by a 10-year parts and labour warranty.
"Australians will now enjoy Panasonic’s high-quality range of CO₂ hot water heat pump solutions, designed in Japan and drawing upon decades of knowledge and sustainable technology in its market-leading heating and air conditioning systems," the company stated.
