Founding Issue
Author Independence Day Edition
July 2026
Editor’s Note:
We promised this Founding Issue on Independence Day. Then we made the rookie mistake of trying to make the first issue perfect instead of simply making it great. A few extra hours of editing turned into an extra day.
We appreciate your patience and hope you’ll agree it was worth the wait.
WELCOME
Every month, we’ll explore Justice Through Storytelling .
This Book Club was created for readers who believe great stories can change the way we think about the world. Together, we’ll explore novels, nonfiction, films, podcasts, interviews, and current events that challenge us to think more deeply about justice, fairness, compassion, and safety .
Some months we’ll feature a legal thriller. Other months, a memoir, a documentary, a children’s book, a constitutional debate, or a conversation with someone whose work inspires us.
Our Club will not be simply a place to recommend books. It will be a place to ask good questions, better questions.
Most importantly, it is your Book Club.
Share your ideas. Recommend books. Suggest guests. Challenge assumptions. Introduce us to stories that deserve to be read.
Let’s build something meaningful together.
So, welcome. We’re glad you’re here.
In This Issue
IMMIGRATION
⚖️ Why Begin with Immigration?

WHY BEGIN WITH IMMIGRATION?
Each issue of The And Justice For All Book Club will explore a topic through the lens of four guiding principles:
Justice.
Fairness.
Compassion.
Safety.
How do we protect our borders while respecting human dignity?
How do we uphold the rule of law while recognizing the desperate circumstances that drive people to come to America to seek a better life?
How do we keep our nation safe while remaining true to our values?
Reasonable people answer these questions differently.
That’s exactly why immigration is the Founding Discussion of this Book Club.
Can you think of another issue in America today that better captures all four pillars of our mission?
If America’s immigration policy were built around justice, fairness, compassion, and safety , would it become a better policy?
Why or why not?
We encourage thoughtful conversation about the stories—and the values—that shape our society. Use the comments section early and often. Express your point of view!
JUSTICE IN FOCUS
For our founding Book Club issue, we’ve selected Betrayal at the Border, the seventh Zachary Blake Legal Thriller by Mark M. Bello.
Why this book?
Justice. Fairness. Compassion. Safety. I mmigration is one issue in America today that best challenges our four guiding principles:
Betrayal at the Border tells the stories of two families whose lives are forever changed by immigration law and international conflict.
One story follows an undocumented family from Venezuela as they struggle to preserve the American dream they have worked so hard to build.
The other follows a naturalized American citizen who returns to her native Kurdistan to visit relatives, only to have an ordinary family visit become an international nightmare when ISIS kidnaps her and her young daughter.
Different journeys.
Different legal challenges.
One timeless question.
What does justice require?
What reviewers said:
★★★★★ Reader Views: “A suspenseful, fast-paced legal thriller exposing a truly broken immigration system while never losing sight of the people caught inside it.”
★★★★★ Readers’ Favorite: “An exceptional legal thriller.”
★★★★★ Literary Titan: “A fast-paced legal thriller that tackles contemporary issues with stunning legal drama.”
★★★★★ Feathered Quill: “An international page-turner.”
WATCH:
Stories come alive in different ways.
Before reading further, take two minutes to watch the official trailer for Betrayal at the Border. It introduces the themes, the stakes, and the human stories that inspired this month’s discussion:
LISTEN:
Would you prefer to explore this topic beyond fiction? Listen to our conversation with California immigration attorney Tahmina Watson .
Recorded a while ago, the discussion remains remarkably relevant. We examine immigration law, constitutional principles, and the human consequences of public policy.
We discussed Tahmina’s groundbreaking book, The Startup Visa: Key to Job Growth & Economic Prosperity in America.
Here’s the...
