Veteran Coder, Modern Delivery: The Hunt for the Perfect Technical TPM Role

By Marius on July 5th, 2026

️ This is me …

I have worked for the better part of 46 years, starting in 1980 as an administrative clerk at an insurance company. That lasted about a year, since I was just bored and done with the day’s work by 9 am.

I started my career in software development in 1981 and continued until about 1997. Started as a developer and ended as a Development Manager, or what is more commonly known as an Engineering Manager these days. Even after 1997, till today, I still keep my hands dirty doing some coding, albeit with the help of AI these days. The languages I used are varied and include APL, C, C##, Pascal, Fortran, Python, PHP, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Rust these days.

Just before the year 2000, I moved into Project Management as the Project Manager for the year 2000 project. Since then, I have had various stints as Project Manager at Technical and Senior levels, Program Manager, also at Technical and Senior levels. In some of these roles, I also acted as Scrum Master. I have worked for major companies from around the world.

For the last 5 years, I have worked remotely with distributed teams from Mexico in the west to Japan and Australia in the east and most countries in between. This period was Bitcoin- and crypto-related, with deep dives into Bitcoin, wallets and blockchain.

As can be imagined, having a career that spans more than 4 decades, I have the experience and knowledge to tackle and deliver very complex projects.

Below is where I see myself in either a consulting or a full-time contractor role.

Location / Timezone

100% Remote – I live in a small coastal town in the Western Cape of South Africa, about 90 km north of Cape Town.

I am in the South African Standard Timezone (SAST), which is UTC+2.

All of Europe, the UK, Ireland and Africa are in a similar time zone.

I am reasonably flexible, so even the USA East Coast, the Middle East and India will be considered. In other words, UTC-4 to UTC+6.

Profession

Not in any particular order, but the following roles in the Project Management profession:

Technical Program Manager

Technical Project Manager

Scrum Master

Delivery Manager

I have a software development background, hence the technical roles.

Industry

The top of the list is Bitcoin-related companies

Then, and this is new, AI-related companies

Fintech and, in particular, payment-related companies

Companies
