Nintendo’s EU Switch 2 gets a 1% smaller battery and is 10 grams heavier
Nintendo of Europe has shared more information on the upcoming Switch 2 model that will feature a mandated user-replaceable battery.
In a support document posted to their site, Nintendo detailed which products of their current line-up would see user-replaceable battery versions, along with estimates on when these would be available, and any changes that these new variants may have.
Nintendo’s move to offer these battery-swappable products comes as a result of new EU battery regulations set to come into force in February 2027. The products will be available in 34 countries — including a few outside of the EU, such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE and the United Kingdom. Nintendo hasn’t said a word as to whether this change will eventually reach North America — EU regulation was the trigger here, and there’s no equivalent law forcing this stateside just yet.
As such, Nintendo will soon offer user-repairable batteries for the Joy-Con 2, the original Joy-Con, the Switch 2 Pro Controller, and the N64 and GameCube controllers, along with the main Switch 2 console itself.
An updated Nintendo Switch 2 will be available in European retailers starting in the Autumn. As a result of the battery change, this model will have a slightly smaller battery capacity, going from 5220mAh to 5172mAh. This represents a small 1% change. Despite this, the console will now come in about ten grams heavier than the original, weighing 411g versus the current 401g model.
The updated Switch 2 Pro Controller also sees a battery reduction, dropping 16%, down from 1070mAh to 897mAh. The new controller is coming later this winter.
There’s no change to the battery capacity of the Joy-Con 2, but as a result of being able to swap out the batteries, the controllers will now be about two grams heavier. These are also due to arrive in the winter.
Nintendo noted that battery replacement kits for each of these products will be made available from their European Nintendo Store "in the future".
