Accident: Malta B738 at Thessaloniki on Jul 10th 2026, cabin window shattered, passenger partly sucked out
By Simon Hradecky, created Friday, Jul 10th 2026 07:44Z, last updated Friday, Jul 10th 2026 07:44Z
A Malta Air Boeing 737-800 on behalf of Ryanair, registration 9H-QEU performing flight FR-1879 from Thessaloniki (Greece) to Memmingen (Germany), was climbing through FL150 out of Thessaloniki's runway 28 when a cabin window shattered, the passenger sitting adjacent to the window became stuck in the window opening with the head out of the window. The oxygen masks were released. The passenger was pulled inside, all passengers in the seat row were relocated. The aircraft descended to below FL100 and returned to Thessaloniki, burned off fuel and landed safely back on Thessaloniki's runway 10 about 75 minutes after departure. The most affected passenger was taken to a hospital.
The aircraft is still on the ground in Thessaloniki about 3 hours after landing.

Cannot find trace of this passenger not wearing seatbelts. At FL150 it is mandatory (in all flight it should be). I'm not sure waering seatbelts would have prevented passenger from being sucked.

@Agnes Eigner
You are right. According to news reports, this is unrelated. The flight to Sarajevo returned to Thessaloniki due to a disruptive passenger that was arrested on arrival.
Diversion on July 9th
By Agnes Eigner on Friday, Jul 10th 2026 08:27Z
I have seen that the flight from Thessaloniki to Sarajevo on July 9th performed by the same aircraft was diverted to Thessaloniki as well.
Engine Failure
By Bruno on Friday, Jul 10th 2026 08:08Z
There are reports that the window was shattered by a piece of debris from the damaged engine. The incident may therefore have been preceded by an engine failure.
FL150 saves the day
By Icarus on Friday, Jul 10th 2026 07:58Z
Great example of why you should always leave the seatbelt fastened and why small kids should not sit near windows. I wonder if the affected passenger had their seatbelt fastened.
In any case, lucky that this happened in FL150 and not anywhere higher.
