The Small-Steps Trick That Works Every Time

In a crisis at work I usually end up doing this one thing. I stop trying to fix everything at once and just do the tiniest step I can actually justify. Then another one after that. For a while I did not know why it helped but it seemed to. Now it feels like the key is making those steps visible to the others.
Most times people either go silent and work by themselves or wait until they have something nice to show. Neither one really works out. When no one says anything it looks like nothing is happening. But if you drop one big clean report later on it just makes more problems because everyone starts guessing what is going on behind it. I might be oversimplifying how that part plays out.
So I try to send little bits as I go like a quick fact or something I tried that did not work. That keeps the space from filling up with worry messages. And it lets others see where choices need to be made before it is too late to change anything. The result is not that people stop checking in.
They just start asking different things. It moves away from whether anything is moving at all. Instead it becomes what would actually help right now. That shift changes how the whole room feels I think. Some parts still get messy though.
