Linux Foundation's Latest Foray Is To Standardize Internet-Native Payments For AI Agents

Written by Michael Larabel in Free Software on 14 July 2026 at 09:22 AM EDT. 12 Comments

There is yet-another-foundation being stewarded by the Linux Foundation that further broadens its scope outside of the typical Linux/open-source umbrella. Today the Linux Foundation announced the launch of the x402 Foundation for aiming to standardize Internet-native payments for AI agents and applications.

Coinbase contributed to this new open-governance body the x402 protocol. The aim with x402 is to provide secure payment capabilities directly into web interactions over HTTP so that AI agents, APIs, and applications can more easily send/receive payments seamlessly.... For those that trust AI agents dealing directly with financial payments.

Back in April the Linux Foundation announced their intent to launch this foundation while today it's declared operational. Beyond Coinbase and the Linux Foundation, the x402 Foundation is being backed by AWS, American Express, Cloudflare, Google, Mastercard, Stripe, Visa, and others.

Those curious about this new foray from the Linux Foundation can find out more details via today's press release.

The x402 protocol aims for zero protocol fees, zero wait, zero friction, zero centralization, and zero restrictions. The project site is at x402.org along with some code examples and more.
