German startup Solar Markise has developed a solution that provides sun protection while also generating solar power for self-consumption. The company offers its “SolarMarkise” product in two versions: size M with an output of 1.35 kW and size L with 1.8 kW.
According to the product datasheet, the two models differ in dimensions and weight. The “SolarMarkise M” measures 3.51 m x 3 m, while the L version has a size of 4.35 m x 3 m. The awnings weigh 77 kg and 100 kg, respectively. Both systems consist of rollable solar fabric mounted on aluminum frames.
The datasheet states that the awnings provide 100% UV protection and are fully waterproof. When extended, they can withstand winds of up to force 5. A mounting angle of 10 to 35 degrees is recommended.
Each solar fabric module delivers 450 W of output with an efficiency of 15%, according to the company. The systems use monocrystalline solar cells backed by a 10-year product warranty.
The awnings are registered as photovoltaic balcony power plants, which limits their grid feed-in capacity to 800 W. However, the primary purpose is to use the electricity generated directly within the household—or, in many cases, within commercial premises, the company’s CEO Eugen Mangazeev told pv magazine . T
Solar Markise also supplies the required inverters. The size M package includes the NEO 1600M-X2 microinverter from Growatt, while the size L version comes with the Solarbank 2 E1600 Pro from Anker Solix. The latter combines a microinverter with an integrated storage system. Its lithium iron phosphate battery has a capacity of 1.6 kWh and can be expanded to 9.6 kWh. The inverter systems are covered by warranties of 12 and 10 years, respectively.
The solar awnings are priced at €4,499 for the SolarMarkise M and €5,499 for the SolarMarkise L. According to Mangazeev, this represents a 10% to 15% premium compared with high-quality conventional awnings without photovoltaic functionality. However, customers can offset the higher upfront cost through electricity savings over time.
“In the long term, that actually makes us the more cost-effective product,” Mangazeev said.
Solar Markise states in its datasheet that installation takes between two and four hours. The startup completed its first pilot installations in spring, including a project at a café in Cologne. Two “SolarMarkisen” have been operating there since April, providing shade for the outdoor seating area while generating electricity consumed directly by the café. Additional installations in Essen and Düsseldorf are reportedly already being prepared.
According to the company, Solar Markise is the only European business systematically combining, manufacturing, and installing solar technology with sun protection products. The systems are assembled, tested, and prepared for installation at the company’s workshop in Essen, while the awning valances are manufactured in Iserlohn. The photovoltaic components are sourced from unspecified partners in Hong Kong.
Founded in 2025, Solar Markise is currently targeting primarily business customers. The startup is focusing on restaurants, as well as multipliers such as specialist awning retailers, solar installers, and architects. In the medium term, the company plans to expand across the DACH region, including Austria and Switzerland.
Longer-term plans include the development of additional solar-powered shading solutions, such as solar roller shutters, solar retractable awnings, and solar-powered parasols.
