At the “Multi Primary Color Display Ecosystem Conference” held in Shanghai, China, on June 27, 2026, multi-primary color display technology, which goes beyond the conventional RGB three-primary-color system, was presented as a key direction for the next-generation display industry. The event was hosted by the SID Beijing Chapter, with participation from major companies and research institutions including Hisense, BOE, TCL CSOT, Zhejiang University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, TÜV Rheinland, and the China Electronics Standardization Institute.

The key message of the conference was that the axis of display competition is shifting from resolution and brightness toward color reproduction and human visual perception. As conventional RGB structures have inherent limitations in expanding color gamut, multi-primary color technologies using four or more primary colors are gaining attention as a way to achieve a wider color gamut beyond BT.2020 and higher color accuracy. In particular, the potential of multi-primary color displays was discussed not only in terms of color gamut expansion, but also as a human-centric display technology that can reduce metamerism, improve visual comfort, reduce harmful blue light, and support circadian rhythm control.
Hisense emphasized its technology leadership by unveiling the world’s first RGBX multi-primary color display technology, following its RGB-Mini LED technology. RGBX technology is an end-to-end architecture that combines an RGBC four-primary-color panel with an RGBC four-primary-color backlight. It aims to improve color crosstalk and color purity issues while expanding the color gamut to more than 130% of BT.2020. The technology was presented as a new high-value direction that could allow Mini LED LCD to differentiate itself from OLED.
BOE presented the industrialization direction of multi-primary color technology, while TCL CSOT introduced LCD panel technology based on multi-primary colors. Broader ecosystem challenges were also addressed, including standardization, optical measurement, color quality evaluation, and color management. It was emphasized that for multi-primary color displays to be commercialized, not only panels and backlights but also color conversion algorithms, content production, encoding, transmission, and certification systems must be developed together.
UBI Research analyzed that the conference reflected a broader trend in which China’s display industry is seeking to strengthen premium image-quality competitiveness in a direction different from OLED by combining Mini LED, Micro LED, laser display, and multi-primary color technologies. LCD-based Mini LED has strengths in brightness, large-area scalability, and price competitiveness, while RGB Mini LED and multi-primary color technologies are expected to be used to further maximize color gamut and color expression.
