What is The Port Index?
The Port Indexis a free, searchable reference to the world's transport gateways — its seaports and airports . It brings together 3,804 ports and 9,640 airports across 195countries and territories into one place, so anyone — from a ship's officer or freight forwarder to a traveller or aviation enthusiast — can look up a location's physical characteristics in seconds rather than digging through PDFs and government tables.
Seaport pages are built from the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's World Port Index (Pub 150); airport pages are built from the public-domain OurAirports dataset. For every location we show the figures that actually matter — channel depths and vessel limits for ports; runway length, surface and elevation for airports — and we explain what those numbers mean in practice, such as the class of ship a depth can take or the class of aircraft a runway can support.
Each page also links the surrounding cluster of ports or airports together, so you can understand a location in the context of its region. The data is presented exactly as recorded in the source — where a value is unknown, we say so rather than guess.
