When Valve listed its Steam Machine gaming console/PC back in late June, many doubted whether the console would sell due to its high price tag. However, it turns out that Valve's sales data have reportedly been good. Some investigative journalism led to an estimate that Valve is selling anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 Steam Machine units per week. To reach that number, the Boiling Steam website used Steam's Global Top Sellers list, where Steam Machine is ranked as number two, right between Counter-Strike 2 and Palworld games. Based on data from multiple sources, the Boiling Steam estimation suggests that CS2 generates around $19-20 million in revenue, while third-place Palworld generates $7-9 million. This effectively places Steam Machine's revenue anywhere between $10-18 million per week. Considering that a weighted average distribution model shows most buyers, about 65%, are acquiring the base model priced at $1,049, the remaining 35% are purchasing the higher-tier $1,349 configuration.

The lower bound scenario suggests about 8,700 Steam Machine units sold per week, with the higher bound capped at about 15,600 units. A medium projection is about 12,000-15,000 units sold per week as of July 18, which is a healthy calculation. Since Valve keeps much of its information secretive, this estimation is one of the most concrete numbers we can get, all thanks to Boiling Steam's "napkin math." For the Steam Machine, which has been criticized for its high price tag, the sales numbers seem to be just okay, and the Steam community is buying these consoles in healthy numbers. If sales continue at this pace, there could be anywhere between 600,000 to 750,000 units sold in a year.<br>Interestingly, we have to consider that this could be due to an elevated number of initial orders, and demand could drop in the coming weeks. It's not unusual to see sales volume dropping by 20-30% in the weeks following the initial hype, so we might get different data in the future. Boiling Steam plans on updating data estimations in the coming weeks as the market settles, so we will know with more certainty how sales are progressing over at Valve HQ.

With the insane RAM prices, and supply constraints this isn't bad at all. It's going to take them a year and a half at this pace to reach one million units sold. Hopefully people get tired of waiting and install a Linux distro of their linking on their existing hardware. May I tell you about how cool Gentoo Linux actually is and the incredible things like distributed compilers and what you can accomplish with distcc and distccd? Once you're done, you'd be more exhilarated about recompiling with kernel panics rather than using this lovely piece of hardware for something as boring as... *scoffs*... video games.

A surprising amount of bite on these units. A significant portion is certainly scalping, let's not delude ourselves, but in current times these bad boys selling anywhere near decently is a testament to the value offer these have. I guess an outsized amount of people just want a box that does Steam, in one use case or another.

I knew this would be the case. You have the enthusiasts commenting on the specs and talking about how they can build a pc with better performance for the money. Then you have people that just want to access (EDIT: MOST) steam games easily without friction on their TV. Totally different demographics.

Though I do think that since ram and ssd prices are so high that its pushed the steam machine into premium price territory that valve should release a variant with a better cpu and or gpu since ram and nand is expensive no matter how good the cpu/gpu is.

So they could probably make a much more...
