Kimi 3 launched, and the world broke. Seems like this has been the pattern of news every 2 weeks now, a major announcement from one of the leading frontier AI labs, and the world reacts with shock and awe and wonder of what this means for our collective future - the idea guys, engineers and scientists jumping onto leveraging these new tools to figure out what more they can build, what unsolvable problems can we solve today, how much more faster can we move through the complexity of building cool, hard things.<br>Kimi 3 is special because it’s supposedly as good as the leading models today from Anthropic and OpenAI, but it is also a open weights model, meaning it allows for people to host the model on their own infra - which allows large private companies and nation states to also decouple from the privatization of intelligence. Not so long ago, the market sentiment was that all the open-weights models were at least a year behind, and this gap was a clear indication of the future i.e. the U.S dominating the world via intelligence tech for the future to come, while China lags and continues to compete but cannot easily match the same quality of output or economics. But that story has changed, although it’s yet to be proven how real it is - reaching SOTA levels on standardized benchmarks is one thing, being truly useful for the world economy is another thing altogether.<br>And the crux of the discussion truly just comes down to that - the utility of this artificial intelligence for the wider population, the world economy. We haven’t reached AGI yet, but we are on the path, and the Labs are steadily moving towards capturing the value they have been producing for the past few years - Anthropic is reporting record revenue rates, OpenAI is in more of a tough spot because they are catering to a even wider set of the population, trying to provide a lot to the average consumer for free or heavily subsidized Anthropic has successfully penetrated into the enterprise ecosystem, which even titans like Google, Amazon and Microsoft have struggled to get into even with their deep market intelligence, customer contracts, compute infrastructure, and intelligence offerings (Gemini, Nova models, Github Co-pilot and other models/agent solutions).<br>But the winner here might turn out to be none of the above. I think it was Peter Thiel who once said it doesn’t matter if you are first to market in the long game, what matters is if you are last to win it all, meaning you create such high value against price that the Product Market Fit (PMF) becomes a behemoth of it’s own, that cannot be defeated easily by any competences, unless you start losing your edge, stacking up bloat and transform into a dinosaur, the landscape of tech changes and you are in a David vs Goliath battle with an up start startup, more nimble and fierce and motivated than you to take the crown for it’s own. Both companies are gunning for upwards of $1T valuations as they go public.<br>But through goes Hamilton.<br>Because of Kimi3, Inkling by Thinking Machines, and all the work happening in the open weights space, one can imagine a future where every country can host it’s own 10T or bigger model, catering to their own population, with their own data residency. Intelligence becomes equivalent to water, available in every house by the tap.<br>Not just that, with announcements like Bonsai 27B, Gemma models from Google DeepMind and others, one can also imagine a future where high quality intelligence might be available to you directly on your phone, locally hosted, without even interacting with any cloud provider.<br>I understand the negative sentiments, and the concerns over environmental damage from the surge in constructions of data centers. I understand that artists and creators feel robbed, that the whole damn farce seems unfair. But I would encourage you to divert your attention to another point of view. History is unfair, the arc of humanity is riddled with stories of unfairness. Yes, our gentle hearts desire order, dignity, honor, correctness in execution, but while we should continue to take inspiration from our ideals, we should also be practical, because we are living in one of the greatest times in the history of mankind.<br>We have access to a tool that emulates the abilities of our minds, intelligence being something we don’t even fully...
