In the world of AI load growth with backup natural gas generators cosplay as trillion-dollar infrastructure plans competing with distributed energy startups, and where regulators struggle to keep pace with technologies that are rewriting the rules faster than the rules can be updated, Lorenzo Kristov stands apart as one of the most quietly consequential systems thinkers in the electric power industry. I have always preferred deep expertise over fleeting enthusiasm, I’ve long admired figures like Lorenzo who resist the temptation of simple answers and instead do the hard intellectual work of imagining how the entire system needs to change.<br>He is not a headline-chaser. He is something rarer and more valuable: a whole-system architect who has spent decades thinking carefully about what the grid of the 21st century must become, and then patiently laying the conceptual and regulatory groundwork to get there.

Lorenzo Kristov’s career at the California Independent System Operator spans 18 years, during which he rose to Principal in market design and infrastructure policy. That tenure placed him at the center of some of the most consequential redesigns in modern grid history. He was a lead designer of the CAISO locational marginal pricing market system implemented in 2009, the nodal pricing architecture that aligned market signals with the physical structure of the grid following California’s notorious energy crisis. He later led teams to redesign transmission planning and generator interconnection processes to enable the rapid growth of renewable energy projects triggered by California’s renewable portfolio standards. In a career defined by complex, multi-year redesign efforts that required consensus across utilities, regulators, generators, and consumer advocates, Lorenzo earned a reputation for intellectual rigor and institutional patience that is extraordinarily rare.<br>But it was in 2013 that he began the work that may prove most consequential. What does a power system with vast amounts of distributed energy resources actually need to look like? He began developing what became known as the Distribution System Operator concept: a distribution-system counterpart of the independent system operators that provide open-access transmission service and operate wholesale power markets. The DSO model imagines regulated utilities reimagined as open-access platforms, supporting local governments and communities to create local electricity systems and enabling energy customers to become active participants in the operation of the power network. That idea, developed patiently through regulatory filings, academic papers, and national forums, has become one of the most widely cited frameworks in the international conversation about grid modernization.<br>His DSO work for the Ontario Energy Board stands as a particular landmark — still among the most impactful, deeply imagined contributions in that sector anywhere in the world. It is the kind of work that practitioners return to years later not merely to cite, but to think with.<br>The intellectual foundation beneath Lorenzo’s work is the discipline of grid architecture. Drawing on his involvement with the Department of Energy’s Grid Architecture effort, and now serving on the DOE’s GridWise Architecture Council, Lorenzo insists on a holistic view: how does a given policy or market rule affect other elements of the greater system? What emergent outcomes might it produce that no single stakeholder anticipated? That kind of whole-system thinking is vanishingly rare in a regulatory environment that tends to solve problems one proceeding at a time, often creating new problems in the process. It is especially rare in an information environment where 28-year-old analysts publishing supply chain data are treated as authoritative voices on grid architecture — not because they are wrong about the numbers, but because counting megawatts is not the same as understanding the system those megawatts must operate within the system. And it stands in sharp contrast to the modeling culture exemplified by Rhodium Group and others, whose decarbonization scenarios tend to assume that the only path forward runs through ever-larger centralized bulk power build-out, with demand flexibility treated as a rounding error rather than a structural resource. Lorenzo Kristov has spent three decades making the opposite case: that the demand side is not a passive recipient of electrons but an active, intelligent, and increasingly essential participant in system design.
